Australia is a great place to visit, whether you are staying for a holiday, to see friends or relatives, or to work or study for a short time. Regardless of how long you intend to stay, you must have a valid Australian visa if you want to visit Australia.



There are three types of visitor visas which allow an applicant to travel to Australia as a tourist, or undertake specific business activities which do not involve payment or employment:

Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601)
These visas allow you to visit Australia as many times as you want for business or tourist purposes for up to 12 months, staying up to three months per visit. This visa is only available to certain passport holders.
Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)
This visa is for people travelling to Australia:
  • As a tourist
  • For business visitor activities
  • To see family
  • On tour with a registered travel agent from the People’s Republic of China

The visa allows you to visit Australia for a period as determined by the Minister.

Evisitor (Subclass 651)
This is a free visa for certain people travelling to Australia:
  • As a tourist
  • For business visitor activities

This visa allows you to visit Australia for three months at a time and travel to and enter Australia on multiple occasions within 12 months from the date the visa is granted.

Working Holiday Visas

If you want to visit Australia and work at the same time, you can

  • Take a working holiday in Australia
  • Work in Australia as a temporary or permanent resident

To work in Australia, you must have a valid visa with work rights. A working holiday visa allows you to work while you have a holiday in Australia. You will have the opportunity to share your culture, knowledge and skills whilst discovering our unique landscape.

Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) Options
You may be eligible to apply for a working holiday visa if you:
  • Want to work and holiday in Australia for up to a year
  • Are a young person (18 to 30 years old)
  • Hold a valid passport from an eligible country
  • Have enough money to:
    o    Support yourself in Australia on a working holiday (about AUD 5000)
    o    Buy a return or onward travel ticket at the end of your stay
  • Do not have a dependent child staying with you during your time in Australia

SCENARIO 1
You want to take working holiday in Australia and you:

  • Have not previously entered Australia on a Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa or a Working Holiday (Temporary) (subclass 417 visa unless you carried out specified work in regional Australia for at least three months as the holder of a Working Holiday visa
  • Hold a valid passport from a country involved in the Working Holiday Program with Australia
  • Have a reasonable prospect of obtaining employment in Australia
Visa option: Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa
You have the option to apply for a second working holiday visa to extend your stay in Australia if you have carried out specified work in regional Australia for a total period of at least 3 months as the holder of a working holiday visa.

SCENARIO 2
  • You want to work and holiday in Australia and you:
  • Are outside Australia and have not previously been in Australia on a Work and Holiday (subclass 462) or a Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa
  • Meet educational requirements
  • Speak at least functional English
  • Have a letter of support from your government (excluding applicants from the USA) and your government has a Work and Holiday arrangement with Australia
Visa option: Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa
If you are the holder of a passport issued by the Islamic Republic of Iran, you have the option to apply for a further two working holiday visas to extend your stay in Australia.
